The problem with metal halide canopies

  • 320 to 400W metal halide and HPS fixtures burn a lot of energy running dusk to dawn.
  • They dim and shift color as they age, leaving a dull, yellow forecourt.
  • Relamping fixtures mounted high in a canopy is slow and costly.

The fix: LED canopy lights

  • A 150W LED puts out up to 19,500 lumens and replaces a 320 to 400W metal halide.
  • IP65 sealed for weather, with a 50,000-hour rated life, so far fewer relamps.
  • DLC 5.1 listed, so it can qualify for utility rebates that cut the project cost.

Replace a 320 to 400W metal halide canopy fixture with a 150W LED and cut lighting energy 50% or more.

The Lineup

Two canopy fixtures

A high-output gas-station canopy and a wattage-selectable garage and parking canopy with a built-in motion sensor. Both are IP65 wet-location rated, CCT selectable, 0-10V dimmable, and DLC listed.

Buyer's Guide

How to choose and install gas station canopy lighting

A few things to get right when you re-light a forecourt or parking canopy.

Light level and uniformity

Forecourt canopies are usually designed for bright, even light, often around 20 foot-candles average under the canopy, with enough uniformity that there are no dark spots between fixtures. A 150W unit at up to 19,500 lumens is sized for a typical pump-island bay; match fixture spacing to your canopy grid.

Mounting height and type

Canopy fixtures are commonly mounted 12 to 20 feet up. The gas-station model uses a recessed canopy mount that drops into a standard fixture cutout, a direct swap for an existing metal halide canopy fixture. The garage and parking canopy surface-mounts on its sensor base.

Wet location and weather

Open forecourts need a sealed, wet-location fixture. Both models are IP65 rated against rain and dust, and the gas-station unit is rated from -40°C to 50°C for cold-climate canopies.

Code and compliance near fuel dispensers

Areas right around fuel dispensers are classified (hazardous) locations under NEC Article 514. Canopy lights mounted overhead are generally above that classified zone, but any luminaire in or near a classified area must be suitable for the location. Always confirm fixture placement and wiring with a licensed electrician and your local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

Controls and dimming

A photocell runs the canopy dusk to dawn automatically. The gas-station model is 0-10V dimmable and photocell-ready; the parking and garage model adds a built-in PIR motion sensor, so output drops to a low level when no one is present and stretches energy savings further.

Rebate eligibility

Both fixtures are DLC 5.1 listed, the qualification most commercial utility rebate programs require. A rebate can cover a meaningful share of the project; check your area with our utility rebate finder.

Gas station canopy lighting FAQ

What LED replaces a 320W metal halide canopy fixture?
A 150W LED canopy light puts out up to 19,500 lumens, which matches or beats a 320 to 400W metal halide while drawing roughly half to a third of the power. The wattage is selectable (100, 130, or 150W), so you can dial it to the exact light level your canopy needs.
Are these rated for wet and outdoor locations?
Yes. Both fixtures are IP65 rated and sealed against rain and dust. The gas-station model operates from -40°C to 50°C, suitable for open forecourt canopies in any climate.
Recessed or surface mount?
The gas-station canopy light uses a recessed canopy mount that drops into a standard fixture cutout, a common direct swap for an existing metal halide canopy fixture. The garage and parking canopy surface-mounts on its sensor base. If you need a specific mount or a retrofit kit for your canopy, tell us your setup and we will confirm the fit.
Do they have motion sensor or photocell options?
The 75W garage and parking canopy includes a built-in PIR motion sensor base with daylight harvesting. The gas-station canopy is 0-10V dimmable and photocell ready for dusk-to-dawn control. Tell us your control plan and we will spec the right sensor.
Do they qualify for utility rebates?
Both are DLC 5.1 listed, which is the qualification most utility rebate programs require. Check what is available in your area with our rebate finder, and we can help file the paperwork.
How high should gas station canopy lights be mounted?
Canopy lights are commonly mounted 12 to 20 feet above the forecourt. The gas-station model uses a recessed canopy mount that drops into a standard fixture cutout, so it typically replaces an existing metal halide canopy fixture at the same height. Space fixtures to your canopy grid for even light with no dark spots between them.
Do gas station canopy lights need to be rated for hazardous locations?
Areas right around fuel dispensers are classified (hazardous) locations under NEC Article 514, but canopy lights mounted overhead are generally above that classified zone. Any luminaire in or near a classified area must be suitable for the location, so always confirm placement and wiring with a licensed electrician and your local AHJ. Our canopy fixtures are IP65 wet-location rated for outdoor forecourt use.
