Rebates and incentives

LED rebates in Buffalo: National Grid and NYSEG

National Grid serves the city of Buffalo. Many suburbs, including Lancaster, Depew and parts of Cheektowaga, Hamburg and Orchard Park, are on NYSEG, and the villages of Akron and Springville run their own electric systems. Your electric bill names your utility.

Both utilities have ended LED lighting rebates for new projects. A New York State Public Service Commission directive required utilities across the state to phase out lighting incentives by December 31, 2025. National Grid's signed-up projects had until October 31, 2026 to finish, and NYSEG's 2026 to 2030 plan takes lighting out of its business rebate programs.

What is still available:

  • Lighting controls on NYSEG. NYSEG's 2026 plan still lists lighting controls, such as occupancy sensors, in its small business program, generally alongside other upgrades.
  • A NYSERDA energy study. NYSERDA's FlexTech program shares the cost of an energy study for commercial, industrial and nonprofit buildings that pay the System Benefits Charge on their electric bill, and the study can cover lighting.
  • Long winter nights. Exterior lights in Buffalo run about 4,300 hours a year from sunset to sunrise, and the sun sets around 4:40 PM in early December, so parking lot and wall pack retrofits pay back on the bill.

A Buffalo example: 20 parking lot lights

A 400 W metal halide shoebox draws about 455 W once the ballast is counted. Our shoebox area light at its 150 W setting puts out up to 25,500 lumens, so each head saves about 305 W.

On a photocell from sunset to sunrise, about 4,300 hours a year in Buffalo, that is about 1,310 kWh per head, or about $197 a year at an example rate of 15 cents per kWh. Across 20 heads it comes to about $3,900 a year. Run your own numbers with your hours and the rate on your bill.

Buffalo LED lighting questions

Are there still LED rebates in Buffalo?
Not on LED fixtures for new projects. National Grid and NYSEG both phased out lighting incentives at the end of 2025 under a New York State Public Service Commission directive. NYSEG's 2026 small business program still lists lighting controls alongside other upgrades, and NYSERDA's FlexTech program can share the cost of an energy study. We check what applies to your account before you order.
Which utility serves my building?
Your electric bill names it. The city of Buffalo is on National Grid. Lancaster, Depew and parts of Cheektowaga, Hamburg and Orchard Park are on NYSEG, and Akron and Springville run village systems.
Which fixtures hold up to lake-effect winters?
Our shoebox area lights, WP09 and WP11F wall packs, gas station canopy lights and deformable lamps are rated to -40°F, and the area lights and wall packs are sealed to IP65. Inside unheated buildings, the UFO high bay is rated to -22°F.
Can LED lamps go into my existing shop fixtures?
Often, yes. Our deformable LED lamps screw into E26 or E39 sockets once the old ballast is bypassed, and our Type A+B tubes run on a working T8 ballast. Our deformable garage light guide and LED tube conversion guide explain each option.
How long does an LED parking lot retrofit take to pay back?
It depends on the number of heads, your electric rate and the installation cost. Each 400 W metal halide head swapped for a 150 W LED saves about 1,310 kWh a year on a sunset to sunrise photocell in Buffalo, about $197 at 15 cents per kWh. The ROI calculator runs it with your own numbers.
